New Year, new phone (and contract). Switched to the new world of android, and as such a new wallpaper was in order. Modeled the Android fella from scratch, and experimented with lighting just using GI in cinema 4D. the result is alright, little techno-neon in colouring. Felt the illumination pass looks interesting on its own.

If I ever get a spare week it might be fun to design an entire theme for ADW or what not. taking it back to where I started out in design to a certain degree.

these are 1440*1280 to fit the Galaxy Nexus requirements

Wacom Inkling - First Impressions

I ordered an Inkling of these within a minute of getting the product release email from Wacom Australia. its Wacom's latest toy for the digitally minded artist/designer/man-child/lady-child.

I'm not going to make a habit of posting reviews/impressions here but I have had a few people expressing interest "if it works". I've had the Inkling for 5 days and spent a little time playing with it. here it goes.

What the devil is an Inkling? According to this the pen records your strokes across a notepad up to A4 in size. Recording them onto the nifty little black thingymajig as layered (optional) vector files to be imported into your digital image manipulator of choice. The vectors will remember the pressure applied allowing you (with the right brushes in Illustrator) to have a more painted look.

Wacom already make widely acclaimed graphics tablets (I've had my Intuos 3 since 2007 and just picked up a large Intuos 4) which plug into your home computer of choice allowing you to paint and draw digitally. The downsides to these are that you need a computer, which needs a power supply and can be heavy to carry around all day.

That's where the Inkling comes in. Charged via USB and holding about 10 hrs sketch time (I haven't tested) the promise of lightweight and mobile digital sketching is offered, with the backing of a highly regarded brand in this particular field of electronic wizardry.

Your AU$219.00 (inc postage) will get a little black carry case/charging base (170 x 60 x 25mm ish) complete with pen, replacement cartridges, the receiver and a short USB cable. the software and manuals are all pre installed on the device and show up in explorer/finder when plugged in.

To Start simply attach the receiver to the page you with to draw on, turn it on and start to draw. pressure activates the pen. A green light on the receiver indicates its on and ready, a central light glows when its recording your strokes and the left light indicates you pressed the new layer button. Easy. When your done, you plug in the usb cable to either the reciever (or to charge the pen as well the carry case) and using Wacoms own software review and export the images to whichever software your partial to. the software is fairly basic but functional. I do recommend skimming the manual before using the Inkling or the software.

I ran some highly un-scientific tests with the Inkling. above are some doodles with the virgin inkling results next to them.Testing how it handled light sketchy, heavy expressive and controlled mark making. Half the a face is missing, this is down to me not making sure the pen was on to start with. Something to keep an eye out for but otherwise the results are fairly accurate for sketches.

To try to test the accuracy over the whole page I quickly drew over some squared paper and this shows my biggest problem with the Inkling, the accuracy isn't quite as good as could be hope for. To be fair this is new tech, and has been sold as a sketching tool not for precision drawing, if the variation was about 20-30% less it really wouldnt be worth mentioning. This is much more pronounced when drawing on A4.

Worth mentioning are the limitations, you cannot draw closer than 20mm to the receiver. Also if any object gets between the receiver and the pen nib the stroke will not be recorded. The nib area is from the tip of the ball point up to the rubbery grip area, which seems like a large area but the ergonomics of the pen help make holding the pen properly feel natural.

One last issue some people may have is that you are only able to use ball point cartridges, that is what your given and strongly advised to use. This maybe prohibitive to some, personally it doesn't bother me too much. Would I of preferred a drawing pen style nib? probably. But would that not enable the use of pressure sensitivity? I'm not sure.

So in closing, do I think its worth the $200? Yes.

I'm not sure where the Inkling will sit in my array of tools for image making, that will come with more use. The accuracy was a little disappointing but nothing to get hung up on. The choice of pen nib might keep some away from buying. Other than these tiny gripes the Inkling is light, easy to use and some pretty special technology. Its not a "must have" like the Intuos tablets, but comes very close.

I am very excited at the possibilities it opens up and that is all you can ask for from a tool. It cant create awesome work for you, that is all down to your brain.

The inkling is available via the Wacom Store and no I'm not seeing a cent from this.

First video I'll post I made for the Judges College of Victoria, working for Kimosabe. was given a logo, some video clips and told to make a fly through. this is what they got. good fun this project.

I created another animatio nof their various topic heading, not that interesting. one topic "judgment writing" came back with a note from the judges saying it was a spelling mistake, problem is I copied the spelling from the brochure. turns out its spelt both with an e after the g and without. English is retarted.

oh yes the music was changed for the final edit, but I didnt do the final edit so the jason-make-better-no-whiny-vocals mix of coldplay is a stand in (is a 10 second loop, lawyers.)

Lots of activity this week! a project I worked on for the Moonee Valley Race Course in Melbourne was signed off. I did this for Kimosabe, who were working with a production company called Scarab. all good fun.

anyways I was responsible for the keying of talent, rotoscoping of horses (legs and all) and re-timing using dark arts. Basically I prepared all the graphical elements for the final composite.

a happy man I be if I never see another horse again.

Speculative Creativity

Worked with two gentlemen in Canada to help them make a 30 second internet ad for the mighty Sennhieser, its purely a spec project with the guys hoping that Sennhieser will like the video, then pay for it or commission them (and me) to make another one. fingers crossed.

It was (as normal) done in After Effects, making liberal use of the Video Copilot's Twitch, Trapcode Form, Shine, Soundkeys and Particular Plugins. also used the tutorial on All Bets Are Off as a basis for the particle build effect.

Tried to mix up my old favourite of audio powered effects by using soundkeys to set different effects to different frequencies of the audio track (blur value = bass, slide effect = treble etc)

An art test I did for a Melbourne games company (they went with someone else). But I am posting this because they were asking for a combination of styles I have very little experience with (anime + Steampunk) so its an interesting experiment for me without getting the job.

There is no real sense of character, I went for a quite straight interpretation of the brief and in hindsight should of just been more inventive and added some actual character. ah well you live and learn.

Three Colours Logo

Did a logo for a friends band Three Colours an interesting project based in london. I kinda like the white on black logo thing (see my adacto logo) and it meant I could avoid having three primary colours going on (RGB or RYB). It keeps options open for messing with colours at a later date. I am of a personal feeling that colour is not as important for a brand as some marketing divisions think. I feel that a good logo can have its colours changed and still be unique and a strong visual. Yes I may assosiate red with Virgin, but also with Coke etc, so red ceases to be an important part of distinguishing brands.

So whilst awaiting client feedback on a project I have buried my head in Maya again, this time modelling a decidedly odd flying machine. did manage to texture it up, with bump maps and all but it looked horribly garish so deleted 5 hours work and am going to start again tomorrow, this time with a more muted colour scheme and NO carbon fibre shaders.

Did this for my almost nephew's 6th next week. he loves Ratchet and Crank video games so adapted a image I found online to make it "resemble" (ish) him, yes he has massive striped ears... and has his lil sister as crank, well all I did was give crank a curly wig, lets not delve into what crank does in his "alone time".
Its all hand done, which was nice for a change and I only had red and black pens to hand.

Also this side of my work is where I am focusing my efforts at the moment as I don't really have enough pure animation experience to pursue that side professionally.

Silly experiment after looking at a tutorial on video CoPilot which explored the idea of particles being created dependant on the speed of the emitter (in this case my pencil). its a bit quiet on the work front at the moment so more experiments to come me thinks. og the music is the legendary SFA.

Did some grading and effects work as a favour, turned into patching up the graphics work, re working the title animation and replacing the end credits. the girl they originally got was ok but lazy. seriously she made the graphics title safe but just shrinking the whole composition in AE by 80% so nothing extended to the edges of the screen anymore...students!

Enough bitching The Idea was to have 3 distinct looks for the "news" footage, Outside live broadcast with the blues dialled up and on fast moving shots a little random blurring to simulate a fake auto focus. Live Press conference, required the least work, just boosted the contrast and brought up the colours. The Interview segment is ment to look over polished, almost candy world esque, giving it a slightly errie feel. again boosted the levels and added some faint glows around the brighter colours. All good fun, I think it works quite nicely, but then again I would.

but not to worry, will post the final short when I am allowed, and am looking forward to working with Doug and Gab at Telmiastori again.

After spending what feels like an age trying to rig sadbot properly (still not there yet) I was jonesing to animate something...anything!

I got hold of Easyman, a premade rig, from http://www.highend3d.com

After playing with the turtorial in my book, and much experimenting this weekend with serveral rigs/models i found easyman the simplest to make do what i wanted. Managed to create this in a couple of hours this evening.

I think i might add some movement in the face/mouth but one step at a time! had forgotten how much i enjoy animating more than just pretty patterns. I'm probably more excited about this than I should be, and its a simple exersise, but hey i gotta start somewhere.

any tips/constructive critism are as always welcome.

So little sadbots story need putting down on paper, plus i hit a confusing brick wall in maya, got frustrated and took my revenge on my PC by spending hours using just pencil and paper storyboarding. Here are the first 4 pages, don't want to give anything away about the story just yet. the ending isn't done yet, but that isn't a problem...

back in maya land have resolved my "issue" by deleting the arms and legs and starting again, and decided to stop being lazy and am halfway through giving sadbot knees, elbows and more articulate fingers.

so much to learn, so much to do, a big towering mountain above me, filling my mindscape (well occasional silly ideas tries to divert me but without sucess, later badger later) atleast its keeping me sane.

a little breather from learning maya from scratch, used faithful Kuler to get a colour pallet and have played with overlaying some textures....yes i have left her eyes blank. the singer girl its now loosely based on was utterly into her performance..hence blank eyes.
